Dinner and Focus Group on News and Community Media
June 1 @ 6:00 pm - 8:30 pm
Dear community member/organizer:
We are writing to invite you and your organization to a dinner and focus group meeting hosted by Hofstra University’s Lawrence Herbert School of Communication on Wednesday, June 1st between 6 pm – 8:30 pm. This event is part of a year-long research project with support from Hofstra’s new President Dr. Susan Poser. Our end objective is to engage the School of Communication in a long-term partnership with its local communities to support hyperlocal news coverage and community media storytelling. Your voice and your organization’s work are vital to this collaborative study that has the following near-term objectives:
- To conduct an extensive mapping of local news media outlets to determine how effectively they are serving the local communities.
- To survey local communities to determine communication needs, capacities, and existing channels of communication within these communities.
Our area of interest is the population residing in Hempstead, Uniondale, Westbury, Freeport, Elmont, and Roosevelt.
The evening will begin with dinner followed by a presentation of our early investigation and an open dialogue on local news, community media, and campus-community relationship. We will end the event with a focus group survey that will be completed by attendees on site. We are asking everyone to RSVP by completing an intake form no later than May 20 (see link below). We will be in touch soon with more information about the venue and parking etc.
