The Ukrainian Film Club Opening Season Event
September 25 @ 7:00 pmFree
The Ukrainian Film Club of Columbia University will open its sixteenth season with a screening of the gripping feature narrative The Nest of the Turtledove, 2016, directed by Taras Tkachenko. This is a drama of broken lives, loves, and family ties that are the side effect of the mass work migration from Ukraine to Italy and other affluent Western countries which cannot live without or with cheap foreign labor. The masterfully told story of one particular family is a case study of one of the most important global trends that affect today’s world. A woman from a Carpathian village wants to earn the money badly needed to pay for her daughter’s education. As it happens with thousands of others in the identical situation today, she sets her sights on Western Europe, to be more specific, on the northern Italian city of Genoa. It turns out that the money that awaits her there, is poison, both to her, her loved ones and also to the well-to-do Italians who would like to profit off cheap Ukrainian labor and not think much of it. Things go not exactly the way everybody fancied. Everybody has a price to pay at the end. This film grips the viewer’s attention from the get-go and does not relinquish it to the very end.
