Continue reading “Пласт – Українська Скаутська Організація”

NY POLKA BOB – Ukrainian Music on Long Island

Bob Petrowsky, Local Radio & Internet Streaming

At the start, some background about myself and the music I have come to know and love, when I mention “polka” people refer to me and the music as Polish. Furthest from the truth on both categories. I am Ukrainian and Polka started in several European regions.

During my college years, I became very involved with radio. At first it was POLKA, any kind of Polka. The bands like Rushnychok and Iskra came along, sparking my Ukrainian background.

During 25+ years on Long Island college radio, I felt strongly that music warms the heart and educates the listeners.

I speak with experience, for example three of my favorite current artists are Mellenia, Zirka and Dunai. Of course, we cannot neglect Ron Cahute – Burya and their interpretive music.

The expansion of the internet has been a blessing for expanded coverage, but yet a small curse because “too much activity” diluted our attention to Ukrainian culture and traditions.

I try to spark the interest and inform the listeners of Long Island events and national Ukrainian events. I cannot do this totally without your support and listenership.

I invite you to listen to the following shows:

WHPC 90.3 FM ~ Monday Night ~ 8:00 to 9:00 PM
also worldwide on the computer at
WHPC Radio Station – The Voice of Nassau Community College

During the last 15 years I have expanded programming to an internet site known as www.247PolkaHeaven.com, heard four times a week, worldwide. Just like the web and YouTube, it’s important to use as many outlets as possible for information.
