ST VLADIMIR’S UKRAINIAN CATHOLIC CHURCH

Rev. Wasyl Hrynkiw, Pastor
Church History

Seventy-five years ago—c. 1944, St Vladimir’s parish began coming together as families relocated from New York City and Astoria, Queens to the Long Island suburbs. Newly arrived immigrant families also continued to find a home within the Ukrainian community on Long Island by participating in the Liturgy and activities sponsored by the church and church organizations. The earliest parishioners attended services in the East Meadow community. Later on, land was purchased and the present church building at 712 Front Street in Hempstead was constructed. The Rectory is located at 709 Front Street, Hempstead, New York.

The church was originally under the jurisdiction of the Order of St Basil’s Missionary (OSBM) but, over time it became another parish of the Diocese of Stamford.

Father Wasyl Hrynkiw serves as the Parish Administrator. The Church has always been the center of the religious and cultural life of our parishioners. Parishioners have generously supported the church Continue reading “ST VLADIMIR’S UKRAINIAN CATHOLIC CHURCH”

ST JOSAPHAT’S MONASTERY

Rev. Eugene Khomyn, Pastor

On the North Shore of Long Island, along Long Island Sound, 35 miles to the east of New York City lie a number of historic towns and villages, along them Glen Cove and Lattingtown, both over 300 years old, going back to pre-revolutionary days before this country was established.

But, in more recent years one of these towns gave way two a comparably recent development, namely the founding of a Ukrainian Eastern Rite monastery in the place of Lattingtown. Though the charter of Lattingtown still exists, the actual village where it once stood (at the main entrance gate) is now incorporated into the monastery grounds. It was over 70 years ago, in 1944 that the Basilian Fathers came to these shores and establish what to this day is known as St Josaphat’s Monastery. Here is its history.

Charles H Pratt, (founder of Standard Oil, who sarcophagus lies in a Byzantine style chapel church in a cemetery just behind the monastery grounds across Lattingtown Road), John Paul Getty, W. D. Guthrie and J. E. Aldred (a less known entrepreneur) wanted to establish themselves on the North Shore of Long Island. Continue reading “ST JOSAPHAT’S MONASTERY”

Continue reading “PLAST, HEMPSTEAD STANITSA”

Senior Club welcomes everyone to their weekly meetings every Monday at 10 AM at the St Vladimir’s Parish Center.

Normally we start the day with a cup of coffee or tea, a roll and a casual conversation. You may even win our 50/50 raffle or at bingo.

Our club enjoys birthday parties, guest speakers, jokes, and trips as planned by our members. Every 3rd year we have a class on defensive driving, in order to safe our seniors money on their car insurance. The 2nd week of a month is our business meeting. Every 3rd week of a month, we have Bible based religion taught by Bohdan Horyn, who makes it interesting, informative and relates our religion to the present days. Every 4th week of a month we have “Everybody Has a Story,” where our members tell us about their own personal journey through life. It is a great opportunity to learn more about each other and deepen our relationships.
